Washington Rt 12 runs along Chuckanut Bay from Bellingham to the north and to Skagit Valley in the south. It's known as one of the most beautiful drives in the US. Chuckanut Bay is actually a small bay in the larger Bellingham Bay. Portage Island, on the right, is a tiny one, uninhabited by humans. The island that stretches from left to right (south to north) is Lummi Island, named after the Native American tribe that occupies the reservation on the peninsula to the right of the island. The islands in the background are other San Juan Islands. Canada's Vancouver Island is due east of Bellingham, probably the mountains in the distance. (British Columbia's capital city Victoria is actually further south than Bellingham.)
