The proportions and general configuration of this bandaji produce a total effect of restrained elan. Possibly what aids most in providing the chest's feeling of compactness is the frame that the front-protruding panels on the sides and top and bottom produce.
The heads on the nails protrude further than they do on other chests and are much more decorative. The rounded clamps that mold themselves to the chest's contours (see the photo "Clamps") are a characteristic feature of the better Sangju bandajis; most bandajis use the simpler bent iron plate.
Sangju, the provenance of this chest, is a small city now, but it was one of the four largest cultural centers on the peninsula during the Chosun dynasty.
(The color in the photo above is accurate, and is too light and red in the "Clamps" photo.)
