Across
the river from my wonderful, guilt-instilling Serene Shing Hotel. |
|
The
Serene Shining Hotel, 5-star comfort and service at 3-star prices. Best
in Hue. |

Another
view across the river. |

On
the Perfume River. You can find more river shots here. |

Raising
bonzais is a huge business and popular hobby. Every major temple has a
large bonzai yard. Culture
Trip tells us, "In Vietnam, some trees are more desirable than
others and can fetch high prices on the market. For this reason, certain
trees on Cat Ba island have been targeted for their ability to be successfully
cultivated as bonsai trees. This has led to a decrease in habitat for
the Cat Ba langur, a rare species of monkey in Vietnam." |

Vietnamese
drip coffee, from cafe to cafe, is consistently the best I've tasted.
Maybe that's because you have to wait ten or fifteen minutes for it to
drip completely. It's an espresso, so you don't get a regular coffee;
but you'll be satisfied when you're finished and won't need more than
that quarter cup. |

This
team is performing a dragon dance in celebration of a restaurant opening.
A couple days later I dined there, as you can see in the next photo. |
|
The
com-chien restaurant. It's a fried rice dish using dry rice (as opposed
to sticky). |
|
Who
needs a neon sign when your method is so sure to draw the attention of
passersby? |

Another
business opening, with high-power intercession. |

A
middle-class home in on the western outskirts of Hue. |
|
The
front yard of the home in the photo above, with the ubiquitous shrine
to the home's tutelary spirit. |

A
primary school a little outside city center. |

Entrance
to another middle-class home. |

Entrance
to a clan shrine in the middle of the tourist ghetto. |
|
Another
clan shrine in downtown Hue. |
|
The
wall of the prestigious national high school. The pieces in the mosaic
bas-relief are broken ceramics and bottle glass collected from inside
and outside Vietnam. |

In
front of a bar that serves K-Pop with its booze. |

A
wedding hall in a middle-class neighborhood. The next nine shots were
taken in the same neighborhood. |
|
The
corner store. |

When
I got lost and asked this gentleman how to get to my destination, he told
me to hop on. He went far out of his way to help me out. |
|
A
mid-day annual karaoke high school class reunion. Those are beer cans
on the floor and in the cases. The one "singing" sounds like
he is the one who drank all that beer.. |
|
In
Hue you need only a wall to hang your mirror and a customer to fill your
chair. |
|
This
side street is close to city center. |
|
Hue's
weather in January is cold and rainy. Almost none of the buildings--not
even tourist hotels--have heat. Most restaurants don't even have doors
to keep in body heat. |
|
This
small-town market is actually just 15 minutes' walk from city center. |
|
The
kitchen for a restaurant near the Citadel. |
|
She
is probably the matriarch of the restaurant family, spending her retirement
just watching the customers come and go. |
|
The
police box is being eaten by the tree. The tree has already devoured one
policeman and a passerby. |
|
This
is one of many interesting scenes on the narrow road that sticks closely
to the west bank of the Perfume River north of Hue. Check out more
shots here. |
|
A
photographer's delight. On the bank of the Nhu Yi River, which branches
off the Perfume River in western Hue. |

A
novice clowning with his friends in front of the Taoist Phap Hai Temple
on Con Hen Island (on the Perfume River). |
