In 1976 Seoul completed a 20-year project to cover this stream, which had become an eye- and nosesore with the city's swelling population after the war. An elevated highway was built over it. Then, in 2003, demolition work was begun on the new eyesore that it had become. Now we have this beautiful, clean stream that extends all the way from the center of town (Gwanghwamun) to the Han River. It's a controversial project: the construction and maintenance of this stream has cost and is still costing tremendous sums of money that could be spent on developing welfare services. Supporters of the project say that it is a pride booster; opponents ask what kind of pride that would be.

Along a 100-meter stretch of the wall along the stream is a gorgeous copy, in tiles, of a long ancient scroll illustrating the"Procession of King Yeongjo to the Royal Tombs." Notes like the one below are posted at intervals along the procession.

Up on the street, small shops brimming over with goods know no walls.
