On the way to Wyoming we traveled from Bellingham on US Rt 2 through Washington, I-90 through Idaho and Montana; on the way back we took US 93 to US 12 in Idaho (which took us through the beautiful but fire-ravaged Clearwater Mountains), continuing on US 12 in Washington, then US 82 to I-90 and up I-5. The whole trip took 8 days; time was limited because there were other places to show Seunghak and Jin before they caught their flight back to Seoul. Most of the photos here are of sights on the return trip.
In
Spokane on the first day of our trip Norm and Hyeon-gi put us up. |

Well
now, that was a fast ride and a quick visit to Yellowstone. The following
photos are of sights on the return trip. |

The
geology in the West is fascinating. Here, note the band of vegetation
on the mountain. Why only across the middle? On US 93, from Arco, WY to
Lolo, MT. The next few photos are of sights on the same route. |

How
did that yin-yang barn painting get into this tiny grocery stop in Idaho? |
|
Note
the stratification of the rock, which fascinated throughout the trip.
We can see stratification easier in the arid West because trees aren't
hiding the feature. |

Different
textures and colors. |

This
rock structure near Lolo Hot Springs (US 12) reminds me of the sand castles
we used to make on the beach. |

Who
is that on the right? |

It was a summer of many forest fires. One was still burning as we travelled through the Clearwater Mountains of Idaho, turning what is said to be one of the most beautiful drives in America into a pretty sad journey.
A
photo-merge of Palouse Falls, in tiny Palouse Falls State Park, hidden
away in the rolling Palouse territory of WA. (You can see a couple more
photos of the Palouse here.) |

Outside
Dayton, WA. |
|
Coal train returning from Bellingham, where they export the coal to other countries from the terminal north of the city. The train is returning to the mines in Montana. If the citizens of Bellingham hadn't put a limit on the amount of coal that could be exported, we would have a lot more of these filthy, dangerous trains every day.
On
I-90 in Washington we could see the smoke from the forest fires that we
had encountered in Iowa. |
