The Seong Gyun Kwan was established in 1398 as the highest academic in Korea. The front compound is Dae Seong Jeon, a shrine to Confucius and other revered Confucian scholars, and the compound in back is where the students learned the Confucian classics. Sungkyunkwan University grew from the Seong Gyun Gwan. (By the way, the pronunciation of the eo in seong and myeong is similar to the pronunciation of the past tense of sing.) | |
