When we think Downtown North (of the river), most of us think Jongno. During the Choseon Dunasty it was one of the city's two main thoroughfares, because of its proximity to the Palace and government ministries. The part of the road named Jongno starts at Gwanghwamun and ends about 3 kilometers to the east, at Dongdaemun. But the road itself extends much further both east and west.
Sejong/Gwanghwamun Plaza. (Sejongno is the other road that forms Gwanghwamun intersection.) At the top of the photo is the gate Gwanghwamun, through which we enter Gyeongbok Palace. The manmade stream connects the Palace with Cheonggyecheon. Every year in the Choseon Dynasty's history is chronicled here.
Every weekend you'll find something going on at Sejong Plaza. This is a mask dance, which was performed on Han'geul Day (the national holiday that celebrates the Korean script developed by King Sejong). Check out a few more views of mask dance here.

JongNo is ultra-modern near Gwanghwamun and its first block east, but then all the rest of the way east a lot of it reminds us of "the good old days" from the 60s. It's full of character(s!).

This
maze of back lanes at Jongno 4-ga was the main electronics market until
the 90s, when a new market opened at Shin Yongsan. But the old shops are
still here. |
