We were riding back to Singaraja (from Ubud), when... What on earth...?!

It's a Hindu festival, Puncak Karya Ngusaba Kedasa. (Thanks for the info, Ade!) Looks like a village is arriving with their offerings and musical instruments. Could be from a long distance away, since Pura Dalem Batur is one of the biggest on Bali.

They are there to keep order, but really unnecessary.

Inside the temple. On the day we visited there were so many people and festive umbrellas and penjor (as you will see in the next photo) that it was impossible to see the forest for the trees--I mean the temple for the people. So I borrowed this photo from Bali Magazine. You can get a good view of the layout of the temple if you type in the name of the temple in Google Maps and switch to satellite view. (For some reason, a few web sites, including TripAdvisor, present Pura Segara Ulun Danu as this temple, adding the name Segara. Segara Ulun Danu is on Lake Batur, several kilometers to the east. I searched for some indication of a relationship, but could find none.)

In the outer sanctum, just after entering the main gate.

When I tried to follow them into the middle sanctum, I was asked not to use this gate (Wahhh--even with my sarong on--No fair!), so I went around, and no one objected once I was inside.

These statues were made from various kinds of plants: coconuts, grains, etc. Saw the same idea in a Tet display in Can Tho, Vietnam. Details follow.

Even small kids have a great sense of rhythm.

A ferocious demon scratching his back.

Kids the world over...

Had a very pleasant conversation with this lady while waiting outside the temple for companion Ade.
