The entrance to Kraton (Javanese for palace) Village. The sultan owns all of the property in this village in the city center, but ordinary citizens can get permission to use the buildings for residences and shops, and can bequeath them to their heirs. The village, consisting of the sultan's palace, quiet tree-shaded lanes of modest homes and shoulder-width lanes of cramped dwellings, shops, and the Water Castle, is surrounded by high white walls. It is approximately 2 square miles in area. | |
