What Makes You Choose Your Job?

by Park Jo'ng-h'ui.

"Motive and a closed mouth are welcome everywhere." This is one of the English proverbs, which emphasizes that motive is necessary and important whenever you do something. Even when you choose your job, motive is very essential. For this reason, we can classify jobs according to the motive for choosing a job into religious motive, someone's own dream, and lack of definite motive.

If you choose a job such as a minister, a missionary, or a priest according to the religious motive, you will live altruistically for other people and righteousness. This kind of person is Martin Luther king known as one of the world's best advocates of non-violent social change. He started a campaign to end discrimination in housing, employment, and schools in Chicago. He moved into Chicago slum tenement to attract attention to the living condition of the poor. Moreover he frighted against segregation of black residents on buses in Montgomery, Alabama. It is sure that you live for other people and righteousness if you choose your way by religious motive.

In addition to the altruistic religious motive, when you take your job - an executive in a company, a professional football player, or a great composer - according to your own dream, you will work very diligently for your dream and if you do that , you can also have fame and wealth. For instance, Park se-ri, one of the famous pro golfers, dreamed of being a top-notch golfer when she was ten years old. She started her day with going her fifteen story apartment up and down five times every morning. Right after it , she did yoga for an hour. Furthermore, she ran six kilometers and did eight hundred shot exercises. There was no day passed without this training. As a result , she could finally win the prizes in the famous golf games. At present, she is well-known as a remarkable golfer and on a salary of eight hundred million won a year. Do you have your own dream? It will lead you to work hard and If you work hard , you can have fame and wealth.

Besides the religious motive and each one's own dream , we can see some people who have no special motive to choose their jobs. A waiter in a restaurant, a factory labourer, and a street seller are the examples of those who get their jobs without definite motive. These people usually don't feel fulfilled. My friend Kim Ji-yeon is a good example. She had several jobs : part-time jobs at a fast food restaurant, temporary jobs at a company, and now is working at a small restaurant. She chose her job just for a living with little thought of what she really wants to be. She often says to me that she is not content with her job since her job doesn't allow her use her skills and qualities. A person with no definite motive will not be satisfied with his job.

To sum up , different motives make different lives , and your life will be also different according to your motive - religious motive, your own dream , or special motivelessness. In addition, you will be able to live a more content and worthy life if you consider your motive for choosing your job carefully.
