Shrines
This man is praying in one of many shrines erected by individuals in the huge Sule Pagoda.

An individual shrine at Swedagon Pagoda, Yangon. Western visitors (including your host) patronizingly chuckle at the the way the Buddha is adapting to modern life: note the lights forming a halo in back of this Buddha--they blink and revolve around his head. On the way up Mandalay Hill (in Mandalay) the visitor comes upon a group of mechanical mannequins accomplanied by living lighting.

These workers are building another shrine. I can't help but being reminded of that fellow U-whatshisname in Orwell's "Burmese Days" who made sure to built up merit as he ruined the lives of everyone around him. Note all the shrines in the background.

This tree in Bagan harbors a shrine. Too dark to see the shrine, is it? If you want a closer look, click here.
