President Lee Jae Myung on Monday emphasized his role as a unifying leader during a luncheon meeting with the heads of both the ruling Democratic Party of Korea and the main opposition People Power Party, held at the presidential office in Yongsan-gu, central Seoul.
이재명 대통령은 월요일 서울 용산 대통령실에서 열린 오찬 회동에서 여당 더불어민주당과 제1야당 국민의힘의 대표들을 만나 통합 지도자로서 대통령의 역할을 강조했다.
“Although I come from the Democratic Party, I am now the president of all the people,” Lee said in his opening remarks, stressing that he must listen not only to the ruling party, but also to the opposition, which represents a significant portion of the public.
이 대통령은 모두발언에서 “저는 민주당 출신이지만, 이제는 국민 모두의 대통령”이라며, 여당뿐 아니라 국민의 상당 부분을 대표하는 야당의 목소리에도 귀를 기울여야 한다고 말했다.
“The opposition may be a political group, but it still speaks for many citizens. I will ensure that the voices of all people are fairly reflected in state affairs,” he added.
그는 “야당은 정치 집단일 수 있지만 여전히 많은 시민을 대변한다”며 “모든 국민의 목소리가 국정에 공정하게 반영되도록 하겠다”고 덧붙였다.
The luncheon marked the first three-way meeting between the president, Democratic Party Chair Rep. Jung Chung-rae and People Power Party Chair Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok.
이번 오찬은 이 대통령과 더불어민주당 정청래 대표, 국민의힘 장동혁 대표 간의 첫 3자 회동이었다.
Lee endorsed Jang’s call for an end to confrontational politics, saying he “fully agrees” with the idea of the “politics of coexistence” and the need to establish a consistent communication channel between the ruling and opposition camps.
이 대통령은 장 대표의 대립적 정치 종식을 위한 제안에 동의하며, “공존의 정치”라는 개념과 여야 간 일관된 소통 채널 구축의 필요성에 “전적으로 동의한다”고 말했다.
“Through dialogue, we can clear up misunderstandings and narrow differences,” he said. "Absolute agreement may be difficult, but it’s my role to minimize the gap."
이 대통령은 “대화를 통해 오해를 해소하고 차이를 좁힐 수 있다”며 “절대적인 합의는 어렵겠지만, 그 간극을 최소화하는 것이 제 역할”이라고 말했다.
Lee also called for bipartisan cooperation, citing his experience from the recent summit with US President Donald Trump, noting that negotiations with foreign countries are more effective when backed by a unified stance at home.
이 대통령은 최근 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과의 정상회담 경험을 언급하며, 국내에서 통일된 입장이 뒷받침될 때 외국과의 협상이 더 효과적이라며 초당적 협력을 촉구했다.
“That meeting was not about gaining something, but about necessity — to protect what we already have,” he said. “In times like this, internal unity greatly strengthens our hand in external negotiations.”
이 대통령은 “그 회담은 무언가를 얻기 위한 것이 아니라, 이미 우리가 가진 것을 지키기 위한 필요 때문이었다”며, “이런 시기에는 내부적 단합이 대외 협상에서 우리의 힘을 크게 강화한다”고 말했다.
During the meeting, Jang urged swift government action in response to the recent US federal raid on a Hyundai-LG battery plant in Georgia, where hundreds of Korean workers were detained.
회의에서 장 대표는 최근 미국 연방 당국이 조지아주 현대-LG 배터리 공장을 급습해 수백 명의 한국인 노동자가 구금된 사건에 대해 정부의 신속한 대응을 촉구했다.
Jang pledged that the opposition would cooperate with the administration, but also called on the president to ensure the ruling bloc's reform drive proceeds at a balanced pace.
장 대표는 야당이 정부와 협력하겠다고 약속했지만, 대통령에게 여당의 개혁 추진이 균형 있게 진행되도록 해달라고 요청했다.
From the ruling party, Jung echoed the call for bipartisan cooperation, while urging the opposition to join efforts to “eliminate the remnants of insurrection,” referring to former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s botched Dec. 3, 2024 martial law declaration.
여당의 정 대표도 초당적 협력 필요성에 동의하면서, 야당이 2024년 12월 3일 윤석열 전 대통령의 실패한 계엄령 선포와 관련해 “내란의 잔재 청산”에 동참할 것을 촉구했다.
As a result of Monday’s luncheon, the Democratic Party and the People Power Party agreed to launch a provisional consultative body on livelihood and economic issues.
